Shoulder pain can feel sharp when you reach overhead or like a constant ache at rest. Many people notice pain when lifting, dressing, sleeping on the side, or reaching behind the back. Weakness or “catching” in the joint is also common. Causes often include muscle imbalances, poor posture, irritation of the tendons, or joint stiffness. Learning what movements trigger your pain is the first step toward relief.
Shoulder pain can come from rotator cuff irritation, bursitis, tendonitis, or frozen shoulder. Overhead sports, heavy lifting, or repetitive work can strain the shoulder over time. Arthritis or past injuries such as dislocations may also lead to discomfort and stiffness. Sometimes pain in the shoulder actually comes from the neck or upper back. A thorough exam helps pinpoint the true source of the problem.
To diagnose shoulder pain, your provider will ask about your activities, work demands, and any prior injuries. They will test your range of motion, strength, and posture, and check how your shoulder blade moves. Special hands-on tests can show which tendons or joints are irritated. If needed, imaging such as X-rays or an MRI may be ordered by your doctor. These findings guide a personalized plan to restore comfort and function.
